WordPress brought new updates in its new version WordPress 5.0, in the year 2018 that were related to security, image size adjustments, etc. One of the updated features was Gutenburg. It is one of the WordPress customization tools.

What is Gutenberg?

Gutenberg is a WordPress editor tool that helps you in editing the blocks of content. Gutenberg has been released as a replacement of TinyMCE editor as the default editor in the new version of WordPress i.e., WordPress 5.0. Gutenberg editor is now officially a part of the core software and is known as the WordPress block editor or just the WordPress editor. Currently, this editor focuses only on the content creation and editing the content blocks, but eventually, it will go on to help you in building the whole website with the help of blocks. This tool has completely redefined the WordPress editing not only for the developers but also for the ones who want to have their own WordPress website.

How does Gutenberg editor work?

This editor allows you to go for different boxes for texts, images, videos, etc. instead of the single box or block that was available in the classic editor. The complex content can be created with ease by focusing on each separate block for WordPress customization.

Gutenberg also helps you to create a new page or post and also to add a new block to any post. Let’s have a look at the steps to be followed for completing these processes.

  • Go to Interface
  • Click on the ‘Plus’ (+) option on the top left corner
  • Search for the content you want to add

How to customize different blocks?

Gutenberg editor provides a toolbar for every block on the top. The editing option for the blocks varies as per the type of block you are editing i.e., image block, text block, etc. The blocks also have settings options on the right side of the screen. From the settings options, you can customize the blocks as per your needs. You can also rearrange the blocks in your post by using the Up and Down arrow available on the block or you can drag and drop the block wherever you want to place it.

Gutenberg editor also allows you to save and reuse the blocks in other posts or in the same post later. This feature is most beneficial for bloggers who add content to their posts frequently.

Plugins for Gutenberg

The WordPress development services have also provided some excellent block plugins for this editor. Some of the plugins are Atomic blocks, Ultimate blocks, Gutenberg blocks design library, etc. You can even use the WPForms plugin to add forms to your post or page with the help of widget blocks. You can also use the Yoast SEO plugin to customize your blocks and post for SEO as per your requirements.

What is the difference between the Gutenberg editor and the Classic editor?

Let us check some facts to understand the difference between the Gutenberg editor and the Classic editor of WordPress.

  • Editor Interface: Interface creates the major difference between any two software features. For WordPress, the editor interface creates the biggest difference between the two editors. The new Gutenberg editor allows you to drag and drop blocks anywhere on the post as per your needs, while the classic editor didn’t have that option.
  • Creation of content: The classic editor works just like a simple blank piece of paper, where you can write whatever you want. But when it comes to adding different elements to the post, it proves to be a difficulty. It is not so simple to add images, videos, etc. in the classic editor. Whereas the new Gutenberg editor comes with a variety of blocks for a variety of elements that may be required for any given post. It is easy to embed images, videos, shortcodes, tables, etc. in the post with the help of Gutenberg editor.

It comes with more flexibility as the plugins and advanced settings provided for each block makes it easy to build the layouts for your posts and pages and customize it as per your requirements.
